With the growing popularity of automation in everyday life, even homes and offices have got an upgrade. Life has become evermore complicated, and thus the desire for simplicity and efficiency has grown. You may have heard of smart light bulbs and other smart home devices, but what are they and how to they work? Let’s take a deep dive into this amazing product.

What Are Smart Light Bulbs?

Have you ever been halfway to work, or worse – on the way to the airport – and thought to yourself “Did I turn the lights off?” This is when smart light bulbs can save the day.

Put simply, smart light bulbs are lighting fixtures that can be controlled wirelessly. With smart light bulbs installed in your home or office, your lighting can be controlled using a remote or via an app on a mobile device. Not only can they be turned on and off, but most allow you to control the brightness (like using a dimmer switch) and some even change colour. Never again will you need to climb out of bed just to turn off the lights.

Smart Light Bulbs become even more intelligent when paired with the right smart switches. Your smart light bulbs can be scheduled to turn on and off at certain times of the day. You can even dim the lighting or warm the colour as it gets close to bedtime. You can also create customised settings, trigger scenes and even add a security dimension to your lighting system – it’s a truly smart and efficient way to light your home or business.

How long do Smart Light Bulbs last?

Since all smart light bulbs are LEDs (light-emitting diode), you can expect them to last much longer than your old incandescent bulbs. On average, a smart light bulb lasts for 15,000 to 25,000 hours. It depends on the manufacturer of the bulb, and how often it is used. To give you an example, if a smart light bulb with a lifespan 15,000 hours is used 5 hours a day, it can last roughly 8 years.

Compare that with a standard incandescent light bulb which lasts on average 1,000 to 1,200 hours, and you can see already that you’re only going to need to change one smart light bulb for at least every 12.5 incandescent bulbs! So as long as smart light bulbs cost less than 12.5 times more than an incandescent bulb (they do!) then you’re going to be ahead.

Things to Know before Buying

There are several ways in which you can connect to your smart light bulbs. But it is important to remember that you can only control your smart bulbs when you aren’t home if they are connected to a home automation system.

If you choose to directly control your lighting using Bluetooth, it can only be controlled within Bluetooth range (usually about 10 metres). The further you move, the weaker the connection gets. Similarly, if are controlling the device through your Wi-Fi connection, its performance may also be affected by proximity. Wi-Fi can also be affected by how many other devices are connected to the network at any one time. If there are too many devicesm stretching the Wi-Fi’s total bandwidth, the performance of the smart bulb will be affected. And if the internet stops working altogether, you won’t be able to access the smart lights bulbs at all.

It is only when connected to a home automation hub, such as Z-wave or Zigbee, that you do not have to rely on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You can also control your smart light bulbs when you are away from home using the certified hubs and any mobile device that has the app.

Final Thoughts

With a smart bulb and the right home automation system, you can create a truly smart and intelligent home that does not require you to spend more energy than is needed. You can get a whole intelligent system that ensures your home is energy efficient and you get the most comfortable and smart setting to live or work in. A single smart bulb can elevate your home or room.
